Shelley's Annual Spud Day

Spud day is the biggest day of the year for Shelley. It is kicked off with the spud day parade then everyone migrates just a block to Dawn Lloyd park for a free baked potato with butter, salt, sour cream, cheese, and some chocolate milk. There are rides, fair food, and competitions.
THE PARADE
Benson, and his cousin Addy, waiting to have candy thrown at them.

Broulims is the one and only grocery store in Shelley. This was their parade entry.
Hot Rod

It looks like Josh was also waiting for candy to be thrown at him.
Josh came down from Rexburg to experience his first spud day. He was a great sport.
POTATO PICKING CONTEST
The spud picking contest is one of the biggest competitions. For the women, they have to pick up 400 lbs. of potatoes and put them in sacks. The men have to pick up 500 lbs. First place prize is $100, second is $75, and thrid is $50. Both Josh's decided to do it. Josh's sister Melissa also did it and came in 2nd. I knew I didn't stand a chance against those Idaho farm girls. Neither Josh's placed - but we can blame it on the rain. It started to hail and down pore during the mens' heat which is why I didn't get any pictures of it in the making. They were incredibly muddy when they got done, but did an awesome job.
THE SPUD TUG
After the potato picking the boys all competed in the spud tug, the other big event. Josh Versey, Josh Yeaman, Dan Stark, Nathan Versey, Jacob Versey. The weight limit per team was 1000 lbs. and in the middle between the two teams there is a pit full of mashed potatoes. The cement mixer in the pictures above, mixes the potato flake. It is single elimination and they had to pull 3 times. The third time was for the National Grand Championship. Our boys won, for the third year. They got a trophe and $75 they had to split 5 ways. Way to go. You can only imagine how muddy the ground was and again I didn't get any pictures because of the rain. There were suprisingly alot of people that stayed around even though everyone was cold and wet.
