This was all over facebook today. People posted this, saying they would never celebrate Columbus Day. I apologize if you posted this and I am offending you but, please read on.
I had a piano student today that said she had a history teacher that said Columbus was a dud. This teacher should have taught facts, not her personal opinion because yes, that is the way it would appear if you didn't believe in God and divine intervention.
Thanks to educational reformers people have forgotten to even acknowledge the possibility that Columbus "might" have been inspired of God because they don't want to "offend" anyone. I believe he was inspired and he was guided to find land west of Europe. Though he so badly wanted to believe it was Asia, this sparked a new era of exploration and people learned so much more about navigation than ever before. Yes, he governed poorly and failed at creating a civil colony but, I believe he was a great man who lost sight of his mission and became greedy and prideful.
Textbooks don't teach about Joshua and the Battle of Jericho. God told Joshua that Jericho was for his people and so they took it over (walked right into their house and said, "We live here now.") because it was what God wanted.
Columbus and other colonist became greedy and lazy; that is not what God had in mind. But at that point in time I think it was inevitable, no matter who would've made the discovery. Slavery was a common thing. In fact many of the people that were sent with Columbus on his first voyage didn't want to be there. They were prisoners themselves and they enlisted to gain their freedom. I imagine even the Indians who were already there had some form of slavery.
Columbus Day is a day to celebrate. If he wasn't inspired by God than he would've been out of his mind but, I don't think the King and Queen of Spain would have granted him what he needed if the latter were true.
And this, you will not learn from any textbook.
