Gardening and Canning

It's taken me a while, but I can honestly say I love gardening. I love reaping what I sow. Once I was caught up on all the weeding (for a day, with the help of my mom) I got some grass clippings from our neighbors, because our lawn mower doesn't bag the grass. I probably looked ridiculous on the side of the road shoveling dead grass into my wheel barrow but it was worth it. It helps keep the weeds down and and the moisture in. It had made weeding much more manageable.
Some Roma tomatoes from our garden
A green bell pepper, I can hardly wait!
The last week of May we planted our garden, bell peppers, tomatoes, zucchini, pumpkins, corn, pole beans, peas, and I just planted lettuce, and spinach.

This year we are trying one of the really really big pumpkins. I can wait to see how big it gets.
The pole beans have blossoms on them. We have been out of pole beans for a month now. This is the first time we have used up all our canned beans before we had more to can, so I hope we have a good yield; so far so good.
Last night we went currant berry picking with my dad. We found an awesome cave that we hiked up to and found some fresh bear poop. As we were picking the berries I thought I heard a bear growl low and quiet from across the creek. My heart started pounding and I was so scared, I heard it again, then it got a little louder and as I turned to get Josh's attention I heard the noise one more time and realized it was a dirt bike coming down the road in the distance. All I have to say is I am so grateful it wasn't a bear because I panicked.

So we made some currant jelly today that turned out awesome. If anyone would like to purchase a pint of my jelly it will cost you $200 a jar. By the time we picked them, cleaned them, and let the juice soak through the cheese cloth we had a lot of time invested into 2 1/2 jars. I guess it's all about the quality time invested in family, right?

It sure did taste delicous. My dad has great memories of picking berries with his mom when he was younger, so it was a lot of fun to make memories of our own and explore a beautiful place.  A couple more week and huckleberries will be ready. Yum!
